Focus on real problems. Twitter isn’t food - Hon. Muhammad tells Nigerian youth

The member representing Daura Federal Constituency of Katsina State in the House of Representatives, Fatahu Muhammad, has defended the suspension of Twitter in Nigeria. Mr Muhammad said social media needs to be regulated in order for youth to put Nigeria first and face the real problems. Expressing disappointment at Nigerian youth, the lawmaker said Twitter was not food that Nigerians required. The lawmaker said this on Tuesday during the investigative hearing organised by the House joint committees on Information, National Orientation, Ethics and Values alongside the National Security, Justice and Commerce, on the suspension of Twitter. “For God sake, what is social media? Are we eating social media? Let us go back to the resources, and harvest them, and let keep this thing aside, and face the real problem in Nigeria,” he said. He added that if Twitter was not suspended after they pulled down Buhari’s tweet, the insults to the sovereignty of Nigeria would have been more. “

Gunmen abduct village head and his wife in Ibadan

The gunmen suspected to be kidnappers abducted the Baale of Araromi community in Ibadan, Oyo State, Chief Tafa Apanpa and his wife around 9:pm on Tuesday, June 22, at Araromi village in Bakatari, the outskirt of Ibadan.    According to reports, the gunmen stormed the village during a heavy down pour and went straight to the home of the couple and whisked them away to unknown destination.    Spokesperson of the State Police Command, Adewale Osifeso, who confirmed the incident on Wednesday June 23, said efforts are in top gear to rescue both victims and as well apprehend the abductors.   "The incident happened very late on Tuesday 22nd of June, at Araromi Village." he stated. 

NIN Enrolment: We need N25bn to buy storage servers — NIMC

The National Identity Management Commission is proposing N25 billion to procure more servers for the storage of National Identity Number enrolment records. It is to submit its proposal to the Federal Executive Council on Wednesday. The Director General, NIMC, Aliyu Abubakar Aziz, disclosed this on Tuesday while appearing before Senate Public Accounts Committee, which is probing the agency over alleged non-compliance with Public Procurement Act on award of N229 million contract. He said 57 million persons have, so far, been registered, adding that 90 servers were needed to register 100 million Nigerians. “For us to reach 100 million, we will need 90 servers. We have enrolled 57 million as of today. We will ask for N25 billion at FEC tomorrow to buy more server to take the whole of population,” he said. 

Police Inspector arrested for allegedly gunrunning and renting riffles to notorious criminals in Cross River State

The Cross River State Police command has arrested one of its personnel, Inspector Nathaniel Manasseh, over alleged gunrunning and renting his riffles to notorious criminals.    The Inspector, who was paraded alongside other suspects at the state police headquarters in Diamond Hill, Calabar, on Tuesday, June 22, was involved in gunrunning in Cross River and Imo State and had not been able to account for some arms including two AK-47 riffles.   Briefing newsmen, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sikiru Akande, urged residents of the state to assist the police with useful information that could aid in the arrest of criminals.   "Cross River is regaining its lost glory in the area of security. Young woman dies from brain injury after she was allegedly robbed and pushed out of moving Keke by suspected robbers in Jos

The deceased identified as Tamara Daspan died from traumatic brain injury she suffered after she was pushed out of the moving commercial tricycle.   Details of the incident are still sketchy at the moment, however, it was gathered that the incident happened on Monday, June 21.    The University of Abuja graduate was said to have been rushed to a hospital where she underwent a brain surgery but sadly didn't make it.    Meanwhile, family and friends have taken to social media to mourn her untimely death. Man in police net for sexually harassing his 2-year-old daughter and househelp

35-year-old Kingsley Achugbo has been arrested by the police in Lagos State for allegedly harassing his 2-year-old daughter and his housemaid sexually. The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the arrest of the suspect to the Nigerian Tribune in a statement he signed on Tuesday. Adejobi said that the suspect was arrested on Monday, June 21, 2021. He added that the house help had reported the matter to the police and Kingsley was arrested immediately.  He noted that the the 2-year-old child has been taken to the hospital for medical examination. 📷: Nigerian Tribune 

Woman sentenced to 30 years in prison for torturing and killing her maid

A Singaporean woman found guilty of starving, torturing, and killing her domestic worker from Myanmar, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison. The abuse of her domestic worker, 24-year-old Myanmar national Piang Ngaih Don, was captured on security cameras installed in the family's home.  The abuse ranged from stamping on the domestic worker, strangling, choking, battering with brooms, and burning her with an iron, according to court documents. Myanmar reportedly weighed only 24kg (53lb) when she died from her injuries in July 2016, after her employer, Gaiyathiri Murugayan, repeatedly assaulted her over several hours. Murugayan, 41, pleaded guilty in February to 28 charges including culpable homicide. Another 87 charges were taken into account in sentencing. She appeared in court on Tuesday with her eyes closed and head bowed as the judge read his decision. Woman who gave out her 7 year old granddaughter to men to sleep with and man who slept with the minor remanded in prison

Enugu state police command has confirmed the arrest of a woman who gave out her grand-daughter to men to sleep with, and a man who slept with the minor.  The suspects have been identified as 25-year-old Miracle Sunday Akpan and 61-year-old Queendaline Udoh.  The police also confirmed that the duo were initially arrested by Neighbourhood Watch Group and re-arrested on 16/06/2021 by Operatives of the Command attached to Abakpa Police Division, with the victim rescued and handed over to Enugu State Ministry of Gender Affairs and Social Department. An unidentified woman has been found dead in a hotel in Ilorin, Kwara State. According to a statement released by the spokesperson of the state police command, Ajayi Okasanmi, the deceased was said to have lodged at Premium Diamond Hotel, Adewole area, Ilorin with a man who registered with fake name, address and telephone number on May 27. Okasanmi said the hotel manager, Olalekan Anafi, reported that one Adeboye James of 12, Okelewo street, Ede, Osun State, had on May 27 lodged in the hotel with the deceased but left the hotel the following day without the knowledge of any of the hotel’s staff. “In the morning of the following day when nothing was heard from the room occupied by the said lodger, a spare key was used to open the room and we were confronted by the dead body of the lady,” Okasanmi quoted the hotel manager to have said. Sadio Mane donates $693,000 to fund hospital in his hometown in Senegal

The Liverpool winger made the donation to help fund the construction of a hospital in his hometown of Bambali in Senegal.   The village located 400 kilometers outside the capital city Dakar, did not previously have a hospital according to local reports. Senegalese President Macky Sall met with Mane earlier this month to discuss the hospital project, which will include departments for maternity care, dental facilities and consulting rooms. In 2019, Mane donated close to $350,000 (£250,000) to build a school in Bambali. The year before he also gifted 300 Liverpool shirts to his home village so that residents could wear them during the Champions League final.

T-Pain has narrated how he fell into a four-year-long depression after Usher told him that his use of Auto-Tune wrecked the music industry.   In a clip from the upcoming Netflix series "This Is Pop", T-Pain recounted how he fell into depression after Usher criticized his use of Auto-Tune in music in 2013.    The singer said they were both flying in the same airplane and on their way to an award show, when he was called to Usher's seat. Soldier dismissed for fleeing the North-East, arrested for allegedly aiding jailbreak in Imo

The Imo State Police Command has arrested an Army deserter, Godwin Chukwuemeka aka Match and D*e, 35, for alleged involvement in the April 5 jailbreak in the state. The Special Adviser on Media to the state Commissioner of Police, Mike Abatam, while parading the suspect, said the suspect was also involved in the attack on the police command headquarters in Owerri. Abatam who described the suspect as a “notorious criminal,” said he had committed many heinous crimes in the state. President Buhari Approves FG's Team To Engage With Twitter Over Suspension

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the composition of the Federal Government's Team to engage with Twitter over the recent suspension of the operations of the microblogging and social networking service in Nigeria. The approval was announced in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who will chair the team. The Federal Government's team also comprises the Attorney General of the Federation and Honourable Minister of Justice, Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Honourable Minister of Works and Housing, Honourable Minister of State for Labour and Employment as well as other relevant government agencies. 

$500k Otedola bribe: Court sentences Farouk Lawan to 7yrs in prison

A High Court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has sentenced the former Chairman of the House of Representatives ad-hoc committee on Petroleum Subsidy, Farouk Lawan to seven years in prison. Lawan was jailed on Tuesday, Jan 22, after being found guilty of soliciting bribe from billionaire businessman, Femi Otedola, during the probe of fuel subsidy in 2012. He had chaired the ad-hoc committee which probed fuel subsidy under ex-President Goodluck Jonathan. Otedola had accused Lawan of making a demand of $3 million for Zenon Petroleum and Gas Limited, his company, to be delisted from companies being probed. The Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission (ICPC), indicted him of collecting $500,000 bribe from Otedola but the lawmaker denied it. For count one and two the court sentenced him to seven years while for count three he was sentenced to five years. The sentences are to run concurrently. EndSARS protester who gave birth in prison granted N10m bail after 7 Months

Kemisola Ogunniyi, who was two months pregnant at the time she was arrested by soldiers in Akure, Ondo State capital alongside three others, after the violence that erupted in the wake of the October 2020 #EndSARS protests, gave birth to a baby boy on June 16, 2021. She was accused of being one of those that set the state secretariat of the All Progressive Congress (APC) ablaze.   A judge of an Ondo State High Court granted her a N10 million bail and a surety in like sum on Tuesday June 22, but ordered that she should be allowed to attend her child’s naming ceremony even before fulfilling her bail condition.   The new mother is expected to return to the prison after the naming ceremony. Daily Trust reported that Ogunniyi who was released from Surulere Prison in Ondo East Local Government on Tuesday afternoon, is currently on her way to Akure where her temporary freedom will be ratified by Justice Omolara Adejumo. 

Suspected ritualist cuts off 7-year-old boy's hand in Kwara

The little boy identified as Usman Abubakar, was attacked in Pategi town, Pategi local government area of Kwara State.   It was gathered that the unknown person has reportedly three young male Quranic (Alimanjiri) students to a bush at about 10:30 pm, on Monday, June 21 and cut off Abubakar's right hand.   The children are said to be Quranic students of one Mallam Aliu Adamu School in Pategi town.    Spokesperson of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in the state, Babawale Afolabi, who confirmed the incident on Tuesday June 22 said the suspect fled with the hand he cut off.    "The victim narrated how one man came to the town and lured him and two other Alimajiris to enter a car with the assurances that he was taking them to a place to give them enough food to eat," Afolabi stated.   "The suspect, who is now at large with the part of the hand he cut, then drove into a bush and when he was struggling to cut his hand the other boys (the ot

The confirmation came on Tuesday June 22, weeks after President Buhari announced the appointment of General Yahaya as the Chief of Army Staff following the death of Lt. Medical doctor arrested for selling drug-laced cookies and biscuits online .

A medical doctor, Jane Chioma Ofoma, 26, has been arrested in Auchi, Edo state, by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, for operating an online catering service, O*mach*s kitchen, through which she sells drugged cookies and biscuits.  Following intelligence and surveillance, narcotic officers of the Edo state Command of the Agency on Saturday 19th June, 2021, stormed her operational base where she was arrested and at least 94 pieces of cookies produced with cannabis sativa were recovered. Chioma, who is a graduate of medicine from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka recently completed her housemanship at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. She has confessed to baking the cookies with skunk in her statement while under interrogation. 

Final year student of Akwa Ibom State University allegedly expelled for ‘insulting’ Akwa Ibom governor on Facebook

Ekpo Iniobong, a 500-level was reportedly expelled for allegedly criticising the state governor, Emmanuel Udom in a Facebook post.   Ekpo has now given the university authorities seven days to restore his studentship or face legal actions.   Recounting his ordeal, the student said he was first suspended indefinitely from studies before his expulsion two months ago for publishing a “derogatory and defamatory article” against the state Governor on Facebook in 2019.   Premium Times reported that Mr Ekpo used a pseudonym, Afrosix Jaara, to write the article in which he accused Mr Emmanuel of reneging on a promise he allegedly made in 2017 to give financial reward to the then graduating students of the university.   He wrote in the Facebook post;    “It’s 2 years and 166 days since he promised, yet none of the graduands received a naira even the first class graduands were unattended to when they went to his office" adding that Mr Emmanuel may have “scammed” the students.  

Corps member to continue serving his fatherland from jail for 2yrs over s*x scam

The Kwara State High Court, Ilorin, on Monday, June 21, sentenced a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Oyeyemi Caleb, to two years imprisonment for a romance scam. Oyeyemi, 21, was arrested by the EFCC on March 16. The commission said Oyeyemi posed as a white online prostitute to defraud one Wilson (a white man) to the tune of $100 (N41k) to offer him s*x. Justice Adenike Akinpelu, who delivered the verdict when hearing resumed on the case, sentenced the convict to one-year imprisonment on each of the two charges. The sentences are to run concurrently.  “The plea of guilt entered by the defendant is a total admission to the crime,” she said. The judge ordered that his phones and bank draft of N80,000 which he gave to the EFCC be forfeited to the Federal Government. 

Nigerian man bags 18yrs in jail for repeatedly defiling a minor in England

A s*x offender from Croydon who repeatedly r*ped a girl under the age of 13 has been jailed for 18 years. Adeyinka Oluwaseyi Ajose, 64, was sentenced on Thursday, June 17 at Croydon Crown Court for raping his victim on four separate occasions. It is reported that the victim spoke to police officers on Nov 10, 2020,  disclosing the numerous counts of s*xual abuse committed by Ajose over several months.The victim was under 13 years old at the time the offences took place and known to Ajose. An investigation was launched and Ajose was arrested the following day. Ajose was charged on November 13, 2020 and appeared at Croydon Crown Court the same day. Popular Islamic cleric, Sheik Abubakar Gumi has said that no school in the country is safe until government negotiates with bandits.  The cleric in an interview with Punch, disclosed that there are about 100,000 armed bandits in the North-West alone. He also revealed that these bandits who kidnap students were disappointed that he negotiated with them without the involvement of the Federal Government. UAE reinstates ban on Nigerian flights

The United Arab Emirates has reinstated its ban on Nigerian fligts barely 48 hours after announcing resumption of flights to Nigeria.  Though UAE authorities had initially fixed Wednesday, June 23, 2021, for resumption of flights to Nigeria, Emirates which is UAE flag carrier has again announced indefinite suspension of flights to Nigeria. We spent over $5bn in the last 5yrs fighting poverty in Nigeria — FG

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajia Sadiya Farouq, has said the Federal Government expended over $5bn since 2016 to fight poverty in the country. The minister said the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), since 2016 has backed his pledge to pull out 100 million Nigerians out of poverty by committing $1bn through the National Social Investment Programme to reduce poverty and inequality. She also described as factual the data referenced in the President’s Democracy Day address, which said 7.5million people had been pulled out of poverty. The National Coordinator of NSIP, Dr Umar Bindir, who represented the minister, stated this on Saturday in Yola at an event. “I am happy to report to you that every year since 2016, when NSIP was flagged off, Mr President has approved that $1bn be invested into that sector every year (which aggregated is over $5bn),” she said. 

Man, 40, arrested for allegedly raping 60-year-old woman in Ogun

Men of Ogun State police command, on Sunday, June 20 arrested one Adesina Adebowale for allegedly forcefully having unlawful carnal knowledge of a 60 years old woman (name withheld). Tajudeen Adigun, chairman of CFII said Imams and other religious leaders should be included in the fight against insecurity in Nigeria. He spoke at a recent event on Saturday in Abuja. According to him, people have belief and listen to their imams much more than the politicians. “This is not to underrate the position of politicians, because Allah has handed over power to them. However, politicians should not underrate the influence of imams. If government decides to pay salaries to religious leaders so as to maintain peace, it is not too much. “When I say religious leaders, I mean generally including the non-Muslim religious leaders, because all religions have influence over their followers. In FCT, I can tell you we have so many examples of calamities that when 75 percent of the imams deliver uniform Friday sermons, it will calm the situation,” he said. 

Tinubu’s probe is currently ongoing — EFCC Chairman

Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa has confirmed that former governor of Lagos State and national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently being investigated.    Bawa who disclosed this in an interview with ThisDay on Sunday June 20, said such investigations don't end in a day.   He also revealed that they have requested for Tinubu’s assets declaration form from when he was the head of Lagos Zonal Office.   The EFCC Chairman said;     “You asked me a question earlier about arresting people before investigation and now you are saying why didn’t we arrest Tinubu? Why didn’t you just say ‘arrest him?’ “Investigation is ongoing. When you are investigating matters like this, they don’t end in a day. Thousands of investigations are going on, on a daily basis. “You understand? You know you are from the media. After you will say we are doing media trial.”

The remains of 42-year-old Nigerian man, Ifeanyichukwu Mba and his two sons, Uchenna, 6, and Chinedu, 1 year and 4 months, have been laid to rest.    Ifeanyi from Enugu State and his children were killed in a fatal car accident in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, South Africa on Monday night, March 22. His wife, Nomabandla Mbah, 33, was the only survivor in the accident.    The family had been travelling along the N2, near Bluewater Bay, when their car veered off the road and hit a barrier. 

Gunmen kill popular OAP, Titus Badejo ‘Eja Nla’ in Ibadan

Badejo, a former presenter and On Air Personality (OAP) with Naija FM, was reportedly killed by unknown gunmen on Saturday June 19 in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.   The media personality who was in 407 Club at Oluyole Estate, Ibadan, Oyo State from about 9pm, was reportedly shot outside the club at about 11:30 pm.   It was alleged that the gunmen aimed at Eja Nla, shot at him repeatedly and ensured that he was dead before leaving without taking anything from him or his friends. His murder came barely a week after he celebrated his 40th birthday. 

Bauchi housewife and her teenage daughter arrested for allegedly subjecting her two stepchildren to inhuman torture and starvation

Actor Mike Omoruyi arrested with guns in Delta

Nollywood actor, Mike Omoruyi, has been arrested by the Delta State Police Rapid Response Squad, over illegal possession of arms hired for movie production. The command’s spokesperson, DSP Bright Edafe, in a statement, said the 38-year-old movie actor was arrested on June 15 after a search on him along Obiaruku/Umuedu road in Ethiope East LGA of the state. According Edafe, one Lar rifle without a magazine, one fabricated AK-47 rifle, one Air rifle, one Pump action, one English double barrel gun and two toy guns were recovered from him. Edafe, however, disclosed that upon investigation, it was discovered that the actor actually hired the weapons from a 57-year-old Chief Otuya Josiah from Umuedu community for N50,000, adding that the chief had confessed renting out the weapons to him and further investigations were ongoing.

The founder of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor Williams Folorunsho Kumuyi, has said he will return the tithes and offerings of any of his member who is still living in sin. President can extend tenure of retiring IGP -court rules

The Nigerian president can extend the tenure of a retiring Inspector General of Police (IGP), a federal high court in Abuja ruled on Friday June 18.    The judgement was given on a lawsuit filed by a lawyer Maxwell Okpara, challenging President Muhammadu Buhari’s extension of the tenure of the immediate-past IGP, Mohammed Adamu by three months.   Justice Ahmed Mohammed who presided over the lawsuit, noted that both the Nigerian constitution and the Police Act are silent on whether or not the president can extend the tenure of a retired IGP.   The Judge also held that while the Nigerian president is empowered by the Nigerian constitution and the Police Act to appoint an IGP, he can by implication, extend the tenure of a retiring IGP before concluding the required consultation with the Police Council and other processes required for the appointment of a substantive replacement. 

Suspected female robber and get accomplice arrested for robbing POS operator in kogi

The Kogi State Police Command has arrested two suspected robbers who specialise in robbing POS operatives.   The suspects, Comfort David, 44, and Timothy James,38, both of Zaki-Biam, Benue State were arrested by operatives of the Intelligence Unit of the command.   Spokesperson of the command, DSP William Ayah, who disclosed this in a statement on Friday, June 18, said the suspects robbed their victim one Jammai Maryam Bashir, 23, of the sum of fifty thousand, two hundred Naira (N50,200) at her POS business point along Cemetery road, Lokoja at about 0945hrs.   "They deceived the victim under the guise of performing deliverance and thereafter robbed her.
