EFCC interrogates Ex-senate president, bukola saraki over corruption in allegations

The Economic and financial crimes commission today July 31 invited and is currently interrogating former Senate President, Bukola Saraki. Saraki, who is a former governor of Kwara state, was invited for questioning over allegations of misappropriation of funds and money laundering. He arrived at the commission's office at about 2pm and is currently being interrogated. It is not clear if he will be detained overnight. As senate president between 2015 and 2019, Saraki spent a considerable time facing allegations of corruption and false declaration of assets. He was acquitted by the Supreme Court in June 2018.

The Police Service Commission has said it could dismiss Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, if it carries out its investigation and finds him guilty in the $1.1million Hushpuppi internet fraud.   Kyari has been accused of receiving bribe from Instagram celebrity, Ramon Abbas a.k.a Hushpuppi to arrest and jail a member of his online fraud gang identified as Chibuzo Vincent following a dispute that arose from a $1.1m fraudulent operation the carried out. Bola tinubu is not dead or hospitalised- Aide says

The Special Adviser on Media to National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Tunde Rahman, has denied media reports claiming his principal is dead or hospitalized abroad. There were reports online today July 31 claiming the former Lagos state governor is receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment in a hospital abroad. We May Dismiss Embattled Police Officer, Abba Kyari – Police Service Commission

The Police Service Commission has said it could dismiss Abba Kyari, embattled Deputy Commissioner of Police and Commander of the Inspector-General of Police’s Intelligence Response and Monitoring Team, indicted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for alleged involvement in a $1.1million internet fraud. The commission noted that if Kyari was found guilty of the allegations, the PSC had the power to determine his fate. Speaking to Punch News on Friday, the Commissioner in charge of Media on the board of the Police Service Commission, Mr Austin Braimoh, said the PSC would not be bound by the IG’s review of the allegations against Kyari, noting that the commission would carry out further probe on whatever findings the police authorities made on Kyari. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and wife Carrie Johnson are expecting a second child.

Carrie announced the news on Instagram today, July 31, while also revealing that she suffered a miscarriage months ago. She said that she was expecting to give birth to the new child in December. Carrie wrote on Instagram: "At the beginning of the year, I had a miscarriage which left me heartbroken. "I feel incredibly blessed to be pregnant again but I've also felt like a bag of nerves. "Fertility issues can be really hard for many people, particularly when on platforms like Instagram it can look like everything is only ever going well. "I found it a real comfort to hear from people who had also experienced loss so I hope that in some very small way sharing this might help others too." The couple got married on May 29, 2021. Hushpuppi to be sentenced in October- US court

The sentencing of self-confessed internet fraudster, Ramon Abbas aka Hushpuppi, has been slated for October this year. This is according to the United States Attorney’s Office at the Central District of California.   Hushpuppi was arrested in Dubai in July 2020 for a multi-millionaire dollar fraud perpetrated by him and members of his syndicate. This week he pleaded guilty to various offences bordering on internet scam, money laundering, among others.   His plea bargain document which was released online this week was signed by Hushpuppi, his lawyer, Loius Shapiro; and Acting United States Attorney, Tracy Wilkison, among others. 

Drug Test: Nigerian athlete, Blessing Okagbare, suspended at the Tokyo Olympics

The Athletic Integrity Unit, AIU, has suspended Blessing Okagbare, one of Nigeria’s brightest medal hopefuls in the ongoing Tokyo 2021 Olympics, with immediate effect. Five men arrested for sodomising 17 year old in kastina

South African filmmaker, Shona Ferguson, dies at 47

Popular South African actor and filmmaker, Shona Ferguson, has died.    The 47-year-old Rockville actor and husband to producer and actress, Connie Ferguson, died at Milpark Hospital today, Friday, July 30, due to Covid-19 related complications.     A statement from his family reads   "It is with great sadness that we confirm the passing of Mr. Shona Ferguson. He passed away at noon today (Friday, 30 July 2021). Mr. Ferguson’s untimely passing was due to Covid-19 related complications, and not a heart operation as reported in the media. We ask that you give the family time to process this painful loss and respect their space during this time."   Ferguson acted in shows such as Kings of Joburg, The Queen and Muvhango among others.   May his soul rest in peace, Amen. 

Two women nabbed with 390 wraps of Indian hemp in Delta

 The Delta Police Command has arrested two women with 390 wraps of drugs suspected to be Indian hemp.   The two suspects, Hope Azion, 25, and Joy Okorie, 21, both from Erovie Quarters, Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of the state, were arrested on July 28, 2021.   Acting spokesperson of the command, DSP Bright Edafe, in a statement on Friday, July 30, said the suspects were nabbed in their hideout during a police raid with the drug concealed in a nylon bag   "As part of preventive measures to checkmate criminals/cult activities and to also curb drug menace in the Command, on the 28/7/2021 at about 2000hrs the Divisional Police Officer Ozoro raided criminal hideouts at Erovie quarters Ozoro," he stated.   "During the raid, two suspects namely: Hope Azion ‘f’ 25yrs old of Erovie quarters Ozoro and Joy Okorie ‘f’ 21yrs old of same address were arrested, a nylon bag containing three hundred and ninety (390) wraps of weeds suspected to be cannabis Sativa

Woman arrested for allegedly beating daughter to death in Ogun

Men of Ogun state police command have arrested a 45 years old woman, Kafayat Lawal, for beating her 17 years old daughter Ayomide Adekoya to death.  A statement released by DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, spokesperson of the state police command, says the suspect was arrested following a piece of information received by the Dpo Ogijo divisional headquarters CSP Mohammed Suleman Baba at about 2;30 pm, that the suspect locked her two daughters in a room where she beat and injured them with broken bottle.  ''Upon the information, the Dpo mobilized his men and moved to the scene where the two victims were rescued and taken to hospital for treatment before one of them gave up the ghost.  The suspect was then arrested and taken to custody. A man, said to be pretending to be mentally unstable, was beaten to a pulp by locals after he was allegedly found with N250,000, three iPhones, and women's underwear in Ogun state.   It was gathered that the suspect, who stays under the bridge in Mowe, in the Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State, was caught answering a call on Thursday, July 29, and it made residents suspicious to see a supposedly mad man answering a call.   According to Punch, residents asked where he got the phone from but he could not give a satisfactory answer, instead, he tried to escape.   Residents caught him before he could go far and they searched him. Disqualified Nigerian Athletes have stormed the streets of Japan to protest after their disqualification from the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics.    Earlier this week, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) ruled that ten Nigerian athletes were ineligible to participate in the games due to failure to meet the minimum testing requirements under Rule 15 of the Anti-Doping Rules for ‘Category A’ federations.  On Friday July 30, protesting athletes stormed the streets of Japan to express their disappointment. Tokyo 2020 Olympic: Team Nigeria officials accused of withholding phone to gifts for athletes

Officials of Team Nigeria have been accused of withholding Samsung phone gifts given to athletes at the ongoing 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Samsung, who is one of the sponsors of the Olympics, reportedly gave mobile phones, Samsung S20+ 5G Olympics Games Athlete Edition, which costs over $1,000, to each athlete competing at the Olympics. The procedure for collecting the phone, according to Punch, was that each athlete visits the Samsung office in Tokyo, scan with the Olympics accreditation tag, and pick up the phone. But it was claimed that Team Nigeria officials collected the phone in bulk for all the athletes representing the country. CBN directs banks to create mobile app for Forex following ban on sales of Forex to bureau de change operators

The Central Bank of Nigeria has directed Deposit Monetary Banks (DMBs) in Nigeria to create mobile applications and alert systems to update customers of their foreign exchange movement. This comes after the CBN banned sales of forex to Bureau de Change operators and directed DMBs to establish teller points to fulfill legitimate forex requests from customers. The new directive was contained in a circular signed by the Director, Banking Supervision Department, Haruna Mustafa with the reference number: BSD/DIR/PUB/LAB/14/082. CBN also warned banks to ensure that no customer is turned back or refused foreign exchange provided that documentation and all other requirements are satisfied equally. It also warned that undue delays, rationing and diversion of foreign exchange would not be tolerated, adding that banks must establish electronic applications and alert systems to update customers on status of their foreign exchange requests. One dollar now going for N523 at black market

The naira has slumped further to 523/$ at the black market after trading was closed at the Nigerian Stock Exchange on Wednesday, July 28.   The slump comes a day after the Central Bank of Nigeria stopped the allocation of foreign exchange to Bureau de Change operators in the country. 18-year-old boy arrested for allegedly stabbing 28-year-old ''runs girl'' to death in Ogun

Soldiers allegedly shut imo market, ask traders to stay away until biafra is achieved

Timber and building material market in Orlu, Imo state, was on Tuesday July 27 reportedly closed down by soldiers.    A source told TheCable that traders were not allowed to open their shops because they closed operations on Monday July 26 in solidarity with Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who was meant to appear at a federal high court in Abuja. However after they turned up to resume trading on Tuesday July 27, they were stopped by soldiers who asked them to “stay at home until Biafra Republic is attained”. Police spokesperson in the state, Mike Abatem when contacted said he cannot speak on the matter and added that questions should be directed to the army spokesperson in the state. 

Stop offering us bribes — Police and FRSC appeal to Nigerians

The Police and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Tuesday urged Nigerians to stop offering their officers a bribe. They also urged the public to report any officer who demands a bribe. The two agencies were among participants at a one-day virtual stakeholder dialogue on “effective and sustainable strategies for curbing retail corruption” organised by the Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption (PACAC). PACAC Executive Secretary, Prof Sadiq Radda, said citizens have a critical role to play in ending petty (retail) corruption, most of which occur in form of bribery. CBN stops selling FOREX to Bureaux de change

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Tuesday stopped sale of foreign exchange to bureaux de change. The apex bank also accused international bodies operating in Nigeria of sabotage. The CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, who spoke shortly after the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, accused BDCs of deliberate economic sabotage and misusing the weekly $20,000 allocation to them. He also said CBN will no longer renew licences of BDCs. Emefiele also accused international agencies and embassies operating in Nigeria of illegally patronising BDCs. According to him, international development finance institutions, embassies and others are supposed to patronise the importer and exporter window, where there is transparency. Henceforth, previous allocation of foreign exchange to BDCs will now be given to banks to sell to customers.

Benin court sends Sunday Igboho to prison, declines immediate extradition

The Court D’Appal of Cotonou has decided to detain Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Igboho, in prison custody, pending further investigation. The Court rejected Nigeria’s request for his immediate extradition of Igboho on Monday, July 26. The Court, which was expected to start hearing the case at 10:00am, began sitting at 5p.m after the police ejected Igboho’s supporters and journalists. According to reports, the session lasted till about midnight, when the court decided to hold Igboho in prison. The BBC reports that the police had brought Igboho to court as early as 7 a.m to beat Igboho’s crowd of supporters. Igboho spent over 15 hours inside the prosecutor office as lawyers and the state argued whether to release him or further detain him. After long hours, the court decided to detain him further. 

Abuja man allegedly beats lover to death for using his phone charger without his permission

An Abuja-based man identified as Hasan Taiwo has been arrested for allegedly beating his live-in lover and mother of four, Chibuzor Aloh, to death for allegedly using his phone charger without permission at their home in the Lugbe area of the Federal Capital Territory.  According to reports, the deceased was said to have taken the phone charger of her lover without his permission, a situation which angered him and he pounced on her and allegedly beat her severely on Saturday, July 24. Aloh was said to have fainted but was revived by neighbours who were alerted by the children. However, on Sunday, the lady's first child alerted the neighbors of his mum's deteriorating health. She was rushed to a hospital where the doctors confirmed her dead on arrival. Confirming the incident, the FCT Police Command spokesperson, ASP Mariam Yusuf, said an investigation has been launched into the incident. 

Kenyan woman Strangles her two children to death after disagreement with her husband

A woman, Diana Nasimiyu Kibisi has been arrested for allegedly strangling her two children to death in Jerusalem-Waithaka, Dagorreti sub-county, Nairobi.   Dagoretti sub-county Commander Francis Wahome said the suspect killed the children on Sunday evening, July 25, and went to Waithaka Police Station to surrender herself.    She told police officers that the remains of her children Sydney Miheso, 4, and Miracle Miheso, 2, were lying on the sofa of her house.   Police officers on duty swung into action and visited the crime scene where the remains of the two children were found.   Diana was thereafter arrested and is in police custody pending further investigations and arraignment.    Police said they were unable to process her for a court appearance on Monday since the incident happened at night and they had therefore not concluded preliminary investigations.   She is scheduled for a court appearance on Tuesday, July 27, where detectives will ask for more time to finish in

A girl who became pregnant at 13, and claimed her 10-year-old boyfriend was responsible, is expecting another child.   Darya Sudnishnikova, from Zheleznogorsk in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia made headlines last year when she claimed her boyfriend Ivan, who was 10 at the time and still in primary school, got her pregnant.   However, Darya later told police that she had been raped by another 14-year-old boy.   She gave birth to daughter Emilia in August 2020 at the age of 14.   Darya, now 15, says tests show she is now six weeks pregnant, and she has seen a gynecologist.   The schoolgirl broke down in tears as she told a Telegram online channel: "The father of this child is Maksim (her 17-year-old boyfriend), because for the past five or maybe even eight months I have had no other sexual partner.   "I don’t know what to do, I really do not.   "I cannot decide on an abortion, because I do not know exactly how many weeks.   "If it is really six weeks, it is alre

Boko Haram releases pictures of abducted soldiers and Yobe protocol officers

Boko Haram/ISWAP has released pictures of the four victims they abducted on Saturday, July 24, along the Damaturu/Maiduguri highway.   The abductees are two soldiers and Yobe protocol officers.   The insurgents also released the identity cards of their abductees.   According to the ID cards, the persons abducted are Mai Lalle, Mustapha, and Lpcl Oyediran Adedotun of the Nigeria Army.   The ID card of the fourth abductee, Bello Abubakar of the Nigerian Army, was not displayed by the terrorists.   Abubakar’s ID card was earlier found in the vehicle where the soldiers were kidnapped.   The four victims were abducted on Saturday along Maiduguri/Damaturu highway.   Mai Lalle and Mustapha were traveling to Maiduguri while the two Army personnel were traveling to Kano on a pass permit.   No contact has been made with the families of the abductees. 

Firefighters called to rescue girl, 3, who got her head stuck in toilet seat

Firefighters had to be called to rescue a three-year-old girl after she got her head stuck in a toilet seat. The parents of Izabell, aged 3, parents had to call the Taunton Fire Station to help rescue their daughter after attempts to free her from the toilet seat failed. When firefighters arrived, they couldn't get Izabell's head out of the toilet seat so they cut the seat. Taunton Fire Station took to Facebook on Sunday evening, July 25, to share the child's ordeal in a warning to all other families using similar lavatory devices. "On Saturday 24th July 2021, the crew on station had a running call to assist the parents of Izabell aged 3 to remove a child toilet seat stuck around her neck," the Taunton Fire station posted. The service commended Izabell for her courage in sitting still while a firefighter pulled a saw out to slice through the seat resting on her shoulders. The federal high court sitting in Abuja has ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to release the five protesters who were arrested at Dunamis International Gospel Centre for allegedly wearing #BuhariMustGo t-shirts. The applicants, Ben Manasseh, Anene Udoka, Henry Nwodo, Emmanuel Larry, and Samuel Gabriel Iwatonaiye, filed their separate suits at the Federal High Court, Abuja. On Monday, July 26, Justice Anwuli Chikere ordered that the SSS should release the applicants following separate ex parte applications filed on their behalf by their lawyer, Tope Temokun. Buhari signs #982.7bn supplementary budget into law

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday July 26, assented the 2021 Supplementary Appropriation Bill of N982,729,695,343.  Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matter (House of Representatives), Umar Ibrahim el-Yakub made the announcement on behalf of the presidency.  Umar said the 2021 Supplementary Appropriation Bill submitted to the National Assembly in June, is targeted at the provision of military hardware and COVID-19 vaccines.  It facilitates the critical procurement of not just security equipment but the establishment of molecular laboratories, oxygen plants, and procurement of vaccines, particularly the J&J COVID-19 vaccines. 

Oko Iyabo Movie: Lagos to prosecute Yomi Fabiyi for contempt

The Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) on Monday said it will prosecute Yoruba actor, Yomi Fabiyi, for contempt of court over production of ‘Oko Iyabo.’ In the movie, Omiyinka Olanrewaju aka Baba Ijesha, who is being tried for allegedly r*ping a minor, was portrayed as being innocent of the charges against him. The movie has drawn a backlash from viewers and celebrities while many people have reported it on YouTube. The DPP director and prosecution counsel, Olayinka Adeyemi, said Mr Fabiyi made a movie from the facts of Baba Ijesha’s ongoing alleged r*pe case using the real names of the defendants and the survivor of the case. Ms Adeyemi also pleaded with the court to exclude him (Fabiyi) from the court proceeding. He was not present at the court on Monday. The judge, Oluwatoyin Taiwo, responded and said the matter will be investigated. 

Sunday Igboho has refused to disappear from prison custody for the sake of his wife and Yoruba nation — Cleric

Idris Oladejo, cleric for Sunday Adeyemo better known as Sunday Igboho, has revealed why the Yoruba Nation activist has decided not to disappear from custody. In a chat with TheCable news at the Benin Court of Appeal in Cotonou, the cleric who is popularly called Imam Oladejo, said Igboho indeed has powers to disappear from custody but has refused to do so for the sake of his wife and Yoruba Nation. “Sunday Igboho believes in Allah and he h*tes cheating, especially cheating the Yoruba Nation. He has those powers and they are from Allah. He can’t disappear here because he doesn’t want any problem for his wife, Oodua nation, Yoruba Nation. He h*tes problems, he’s a good man and that’s why I love him,” he said. . Recall that the Benin Republic police on Monday, July 19, arrested Igboho at Cardinal Bernardin International Airport in Cotonou, while trying to fly from the country to Germany. He is accused of obtaining a fake Beninise passport. 

Justice For Ini Umoren: Akpan Pleads Guilty To M*rder, Not Guilty To R*pe

  Uduak Akpan, the self-confessed killer of Iniubong Umoren, the Akwa Ibom graduate lured out of her home with a fake job interview, on Monday pleaded guilty to the murder.  He was arraigned before a State High Court judge in Uyo. Recall that  Miss Umoren was r*ped and killed in April on the outskirts of Uyo by Akpan who the police in Akwa Ibom State described as a serial r*pist. She was buried in a shallow grave in Akpan’s family house where the crime was committed. Akpan, who was arraigned alongside his father, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge of rape. The case is being prosecuted by the Akwa Ibom State Government.

The Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos, on Monday adjourned the child molestation case against embattled Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju Omiyinka, aka Baba Ijesha. Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo while delivering judgment, adjourned the matter after the counsel for comedienne Adekola Adekanya, commonly known as Princess, played primary evidence against the embattled actor. During plenary, Princess told the court that she met Baba Ijesha at an event in 2008 and the two decided to collaborate on comedic sketches. Bandits release kidnapped mother, child after N2.5m ransom payment and four others as 'Sallah gift' to Katsina community

Bandits have released six of their victims in Katsina state after spending 66 days in captivity.    The victims and 22 others were abducted while one person was killed when bandits attacked some communities in Batsari Local Government Area of the state last May.    A local source told AIT that one of the victims identified as Hussaina Umar Tukur and her child, Al-Ameen secured their freedom after her family payed N2.5 million cash as ransom.  A resident, Misbahu Batsari, told Premium Times that when they were to release Hussaina Umar and her son, the bandits decided to select four out of the remaining people in captivity and sent them as a Sallah gift to the people of the community.   It was gathered that after receiving the ransom, the bandits promised to release Hussaina and her son to her family at a location in Batsari on Friday evening, July 23.    A member of Hussaina’s family who went to the location to pick her, however, met other victims out of which four were also

Bandits release 28 abducted students of Baptist High School

28 abducted students of Bethel Baptist High School, Damishi, Kaduna have been released by bandits after spending 20 days in captivity.   Joseph Hayab, Kaduna state chairman of the Christian Association of Nigerian (CAN) confirmed the release of 28 students.    Recall that a total of 121 students were abducted from their school hostels by bandits on July 5.   While one of the students, Abraham Aniya was rescued by security operatives alongside two other victims who were kidnapped along Kaduna-Kachia road on July 12, two other students escaped when they were asked to fetch firewood from a nearby forest on July 20.
