Graphic: Man allegedly brutalizes sister over property in Enugu

A 59-year-old Nigerian woman simply identified as Maureen is currently writhing in pain after her brother allegedly attacked her over their father's property in Enugu state.   According to Human rights group, Women's Aid Collective WACOL, the victim said their late father left the said property in her custody and made her promise to take care of the property and not transfer ownership to Mr Francis Egbujie.  . . However, the victim alleged that, over time, her brother has been pestering her to hand over the documents to him but she refused. Reports reveals that on Wednesday, Sept.30, 2020, Francis attempted to kill his sister by breaking her head.  . The victim, Maureen, revealed that before her brutalization, when her siblings lodged a complaint at Trans Ekulu Police Station, they were detained for reason unknown to them. Maureen is currently receiving treatment in a hospital. 

Police declare former Minister, Kenneth Gbagi declared wanted over hotel staff who were assaulted and stripped naked

Former Minister of State for Education, Kenneth Gbagi has been declared wanted by the police over his hotel staff who were allegedly assaulted and stripped naked over a missing money.    In a statement released by the Delta state police spokesperson DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, Gbagi was accused of refusing to honor several police invitations.   The statement read;    “Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi was invited by the Commissioner of Police through the Area Commander Warri and DPO Ebrumede Division on September 25th, 2020 for questioning concerning the alleged dehumanising manner in which he ordered some of his staff be stripped naked and physically assaulted. “Kenneth Gbagi personally and severally called and gave the excuse that he has a burial ceremony of his elder sister on Friday 25/9/2020 in which he is a key player, and asked for time to finish with the ceremony on Sunday, thereafter will report at the State Headquarters on Monday, September 28, 2020. Unity schools to resume October 11- Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu has announced that unity schools will be reopening across the country on October 11.    The Minister in the letter which confirmed the reopening of Unity Schools, said the decision was taken to enable students who have been at home since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic to complete their academic session which will end in December.   Officials of the schools have been urged to ensure that COVID-19 protocols are strictly observed to prevent its spread among students. Schools that have not concluded their 2nd term examination, were asked to "round off and commence 3rd term immediately which is expected to end in December".

'Twitter killer' who lured nine victims to their death after they expressed suicidal thoughts on social media tells Japanese court they all wanted to die

A Japanese man, dubbed the "Twitter killer" after he lured suicidal social media users to their death, admitted in court on Wednesday, September 30, to killing nine people, local media said.   Takahiro Shiraishi, 29, is also accused of dismembering his victims and storing body parts in coolboxes, did not contest nine counts of murder, saying they "are all correct", public broadcaster NHK reported.   But lawyers for Takahiro Shiraishi argued the charges should be reduced because the victims - who had expressed suicidal thoughts - wanted him to kill them.   He is accused of using Twitter to contact victims aged between 15 and 26 who talked online about committing suicide, telling them he could help them in their plans - or even die alongside them.     His lawyers want the charges against him reduced to "murder with consent", which carries a prison sentence of between six months and seven years.   He is also facing rape charges, according to media reports.   

Girl murdered on her way to church in Delta. Vital organs removed

The lifeless body of a young girl, identified as Anwuli Joy Agu, has been discovered on the premises of Esume-uku Primary School, Obiaruku, Delta State, with some vital organs missing and her hair shaved off. The incident happened on Sunday in Umusume community. According to one of the deceased’s relations, Anwuli was murdered on her way to church mass by some suspected ritualists.  The Commissioner of Police, Hafiz Mohammed, confirmed the development, adding that the police were already on the matter.

The Managing director of MultiChoice Nigeria, parent production company of the Big Brother Naija franchise, John Ugbe, has revealed that the Big brother Lockdown season recorded the highest votes ever in the history of the show. . He revealed this at a media briefing and presentation of prize money to Laycon, the season’s winner, today in Lagos. He said that the show recorded 900 million votes (inclusive of online voting) from the different voting platforms and cost of producing the show was N3.5bn. 

Nigerians are more afraid of police than criminals — Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has stated that Nigerians are scared of police than criminals. He stated this in his opening remarks in the House following a two-month holiday. He also commended the President for signing the police reform act into law. He added that the Nigeria Police force as presently constituted has failed to meet expectations of Nigerians. Further, he noted that “there will be further legislation to improve police performance across the board and to introduce mechanisms for individual and collective accountability in the Nigeria Police Force. Our objective is nothing short of a total overhaul of the culture and practice of policing in Nigeria.” 

Graphic: Akwa Ibom man commits suicide after killing his wife over alleged infidelity

Tragedy struck in Bashua community, Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State as a man allegedly killed his wife and then committed suicide over her alleged infidelity. According to Martmercy Busaosowo, the man, said to hail from neighbouring Akwa Ibom State murdered his wife in the early hours of Monday, September 28, after he heard that she had been sleeping around with other men.   His body was later found dangling from a tree in the bush by members of the community. The names of the couple are yet to be disclosed.

FG declares Thursday a public holiday

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2020, as a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 60th Independence Anniversary. According to a statement by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Georgina Ehuriah , the  Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, praised Nigerians for the feats in economy, education, the creative sector, amongst others. He congratulated all Nigerians on the celebration of the country’s Diamond Jubilee while stressing the government’s commitment to the socio-economic transformation of the country. 

Global coronavirus death toll surpasses 1 million people

More than one million people across the globe have now died of COVID-19, according to Johns Hopkins University. The toll comes about nine months after the illness was first detected in Wuhan, China. The first death linked to coronavirus in China was reported on Jan. 11, according to the World Health Organization, and 10 days later the virus  was reported in the US . Since then, America has accounted for over 20 percent of the worldwide COVID-19 fatalities with over 205,000 deaths. Brazil has the second-most fatalities, with more than 142,000 dead. India has the third-most deaths globally, reporting over 95,000. The one millionth death from the novel coronavirus comes as pharmaceutical companies are racing to develop a proven and safe vaccine against the bug. Couple, two others arrested with human skull in Ogun

A couple, Niyi and Remilekun Folorunso, have been arrested alongside two others for allegedly cutting off a human skull from a grave in the Odogbolu area of Ogun State. Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command said the suspects were arrested on Thursday “for unlawfully being in possession of human skulls.” The other suspects were identified as Muyideen Tolubi and Sonubi Taiwo. They were arrested following information received by the police that they were “digging a grave with the aim of removing an already buried corpse, which was not in any way related to them.” The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, told newsmen that the DPO at Odogbolu, CSP Afolabi Yusuf, led detectives to the scene but the suspects had already severed the head from the corpse and left. N2.67bn school feeding funds discovered in private accounts – ICPC

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), on Monday revealed that it has uncovered a whopping N2.67 billion payment made to some federal colleges for school feeding during the lockdown when children were not in school, which ended up in personal accounts. ICPC Chairman, Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye, made the disclosure Monday in his keynote address at the second National Summit on Diminishing Corruption with the theme: “Together Against Corruption and Launch of the National Ethics and Integrity Policy,” held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. He explained that in the Open Treasury Portal review carried out between January to August 15, 2020, out of 268 Ministries, Departments and Agendas (MDAs) 72 of them had cumulative infractions of N90 million. He said while 33 MDAs tendered explanations that N4.1 billion was transferred to sub-TSA, N4.2 billion paid to individuals had no satisfactory explanations. Three killed as truck plunges into Epe River

The tipper said to be laden with sand, fell off the Berger Bridge into the River late Friday drowning unspecified number of occupants. Ejiofor after he was caught   A 23-year-old man simply identified as Ejiofor has been apprehended after allegedly stealing a plasma television in Wumba village, Abuja.   A house owner identified as Mrs Comfort Daniel revealed that the 23-year-old suspect was arrested and taken to the chief’s palace in Wumba.   Comfort said Ejiofor invaded her house while she went out to buy something by the roadside.   She said she left her 11-year -old son at home when the suspect entered the house and went straight to the parlour to remove the plasma television from the wall.   “My son asked him what he was looking for, and he replied that I directed him to come and remove the television for repairs. Bandits kill Army colonel, two soldiers in Katsina

A Nigerian Army colonel, M.Z Manu and two soldiers have been killed by bandits in Unguwar Doka Village under Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State. It was gathered that the bandits, armed with AK-47 rifles invaded the villages on Thursday night and started shooting indiscriminately. Togo's Prime Minister Komi Selom Klassou and his government have resigned in a political reshuffle delayed by the Coronavirus pandemic.   The resignation came after President Faure Gnassingbe won his re-election in March, extending his 15-year-old rule and a family dynasty that began when his father took power in a 1967 coup.   Komi Selom Klassou has served as prime minister since 2015. Commenting on the resignation of the prime minister, Gnassingbe congratulated Klassou and his team for their "economic, political and social efforts and the encouraging results despite the health crisis around the world."   The presidency did not say when a new prime minister would be appointed.

One Zakaria Isah, 25, has narrated how his sister, Bilikisu Isah died from complications she sustained after she was allegedly tortured by police operatives attached to Bola Police Outpost in Maraba, Karu Local Government of Nasarawa State.   It was gathered that police arrested 20-year-old Bilikisu, an apprentice tailor, on Monday, August 31, 2020, because her ex-boyfriend identified as Abdul, was alleged to have absconded after stealing N1.4 million in the car dealership center in Maitama, Abuja, where he was working for a Lebanese national.    Bilikisu was alleged to have been tortured for a whole day. The police officers only called her parents to come take her after she started vomiting blood. Her health deteriorated and she died few days later.   Speaking to  Punch  Zakaria, a waiter in an Abuja hotel, claimed that the policemen called his sister a prostitute and other unpalatable names, forcibly removed her hijab, and inflicted injuries all over her body with cable wires. Scores missing as truck plunges into river in Lagos

Scores of persons have been declared missing after a truck conveying sand, fell off the Berger bridge into the Epe river in Lagos State on Friday night September 25.   In a statement released today September 25, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency LASEMA said the number of persons in the truck was unknown and that efforts are being made to rescue who plunged into the river. The statement reads   ''The Agency received information late last night of an accident involving a Volvo tipper that fell off the Berger bridge at Epe into the Epe river. Upon arrival at the scene of incident, it was discovered that the six (6) Tyre Truck was loaded with Sand And the number of people in the truck was unknown. Hope Uzodimma, the Imo State Governor, says those referring to him as a “Supreme Court Governor”, are ignorant. A 22-year-old man simply identified as Sarafa Ayuba, has committed suicide beside his uncle’s house at Amuloko area of Ona Ara Local Government part of Oyo State on Friday, September 25.   An uncle of the deceased, Kazeem Tijani, recounted how Ayuba was declared missing and his body was recovered.   “Ayuba got the motorcycle on hire purchase basis and he was paying the instalments adequately. He was my brother’s son. He was not indebted to anyone and he was not starving at all. He was not married. He has been living with me for the past two to three years. A 26-year-old man, Chisom Ogum, on Saturday allegedly killed his father, Christopher, 70, in Anambra State. The incident happened in Umuomaku in the Orumba South Local Government Area, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Mohammed, who confirmed the incident said. He added that the suspect had been arrested. He said the suspected ran amok in a circumstance yet to be ascertained before he attacked and killed the father.
