Nigeria customs service generates N799bn in 5 months

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced that the agency generated N799 billion revenue between January and May 2021. The Public Relations Officer of the agent, Mr Joseph Attah, disclosed this on Monday, May 31, while addressing newsmen in Abuja. According to Attah, the revenue was higher compared with what was realised in the same period in 2020, adding that there is 'a positive difference of N226.1 billion' According to him, the increasing inclination of officers and men to put "national interest above selfish interests is responsible for the improvement of revenue." He said other reasons for the increase were giant "stakeholders sensitisation, increasing level of compliance from stakeholders and improved working relations with the National Assembly." 

Ahmed Gulak death calculated to instigate the northerners against the Igbos - Gov Akeredolu

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu  of Ondo state has described the murder of Ahmed Gulak' as senseless and wicked, saying it was calculated to Instigate the Northerners against the Igbos. The former Presidential aide was murdered on his way to catch a flight at Sam Mbakwe International Airport. Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo state openly condemned the greusome murder in a statement titled ; Ahmed Gulak; A Killing Too Senseless and Wicked. A Kenyan woman, Elizabeth Nalem last week shocked her countrymen by ending her 20-year-marriage to “marry” the Holy Spirit.   The mother of six from Makutano town in West Pokot County exchanged wedding vows with Holy Spirit on Tuesday, May 25, in a ‘lavish’ ceremony that attracted a multitude of people at the Chelang’a Gardens.   Her husband, Joshua Nalem was said to be have been left in a quagmire not knowing what step to take next, after his wife left their matrimonial home to dedicate her life to the church.   Joshua said;    “She went to church one day and when she returned she started waking up at 3am to go and pray. China scraps law banning parents from having over two children, increases limit to three

China has scrapped its controversial 'two child' policy and will now allow couples to have three kids. According to Chinese state media, the move was approved by President Xi Jinping in order to aid the country's ageing population. This comes after Beijing abolished its infamous 'one child' policy in 2016 which had been in place since the late-1970s. The government believed that the high cost of raising kids in Chinese cities deterred many couples from starting families so the two children policy wasn't helping with population growth . Gunmen abduct lecturer from staff quarters of Taraba State University

Head of the Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management (Faculty of Agriculture) in Taraba state university, Umar Buba has been abducted by gunmen from the staff quarters of the institution in Jalingo, Taraba state capital.    Professor Vincent Ado-Tenebe who is the Vice-Chancellor of the university, said the lecturer was kidnapped in the early hours of Sunday May 30.   Tenebe disclosed that the assailants fired sporadic gunshots to displace the security officials attached to the staff quarters during the attack.   The Vice Chancellor also said that the management of the institution would engage concerned authorities to grant licences for staff to have their guns for their protection and that of the students, as they can't fight gunmen with bare hands.    Tenebe added;    “If you have a licensed gun and you are trained, then you will be able to defend your family and the immediate community of students. “We have grown past this, and I don’t think there is going to be

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has denied claims by publisher and activist, Omoyele Sowore, that he was shot at in Abuja during a protest against insecurity in the country today, May 31.    Reacting to his claim, the spokesperson for the command, Mariam Yusuf, in a statement released, said there was no record of any incident such as a shooting during the protest.   The statement titled ‘Police restores calm at the Unity Fountain’ reads   “The FCT Command wishes to debunk the viral message in some sections of the social media purporting that ‘Omoyele Sowore was shot by a female Assistant Commissioner of Police’ at the Unity Fountain. Immigration provost shot dead in Imo

The Chief Provost of Nigerian Immigration Service in Imo, Okiemute Mrere, has been killed.   Mrere was killed along the Owerri- Port Harcourt Road in Owerri, the Imo state capital on Saturday, May 29. His body was later discovered in a bush on Sunday morning, May 30.   The deceased was said to be riding an Immigration Hilux van when he was intercepted by his assailants and shot at close range. The van was found riddled with bullets. None of his valuable was however taken from him. His service pistol was found on him when his body was discovered the next day.   Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the state's Immigration command, Winifred Oguh said “Yes I can confirm to you that we lost one of our officers, Deputy Superintendent of Immigration (DSI) Okiemute Mrere. We are yet to get full details of the incident as investigations are still ongoing.''   Just this weekend, a former presidential aide, Ahmed Gulak, was also murdered in Imo. 

U.S. boxer, Deontay Wilder vows to "decapitate" Tyson Fury as he sends warning to him ahead of their trilogy fight

Suspected kidnappers abduct U.S. returnee in Kwara, demand N100m ransom

  The victim identified as Muritala Adebayo, was said to have been kidnapped on his farm located at Pampo, Asa Local Government Area of the state, on Thursday, May 27.   "We were all at the farm when suddenly we started hearing sporadic gunshots and we all scampered for safety. Some few minutes later, we learnt the owner of a neighbouring farm had been kidnapped.” an eyewitness told journalists.    A family source also said the kidnappers had contacted them and demanded a ransom of N100m to secure his release.    "They have called us more than four times, asking us to ensure we get the money or he will not be returned alive. The Imo state police command says it has neutralized the killers of former presidential aide, Ahmed Gulak. Ahmed was murdered while on his way to the airport in Owerri, Imo state on Sunday morning, May 30. Unidentified man ordered out of his SUV and shot dead on the road in Enugu

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mohammed Ndatsu Aliyu, psc, has ordered the launch of a full-scale manhunt of yet-to-be idenitifed armed assailants alleged to have trailed and shot dead an unidentified man driving in a Mercedes Benz Jeep, which they carted away, along Ebeano Tunnel, Enugu on Sunday, May 30, at about 5pm. A statement released by the spokesperson of the state police command, ASP Daniel Ndukwe, said the victim, whose true identify is yet to be known, was rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead by doctors on duty and deposited in the mortuary for autopsy. The Imo state police command has confirmed the murder of Ahmed Gulak, the former political adviser, to former President Goodluck Jopnathan. APC chieftain, Ahmed Gulak, shot dead by unknown gunmen in Imo

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former aide to ex-President, Goodluck Jonathan, has been killed by unknown gunmen in Imo state.  Gulak was shot dead on Saturday night, May 29, by unknown gunmen while returning to Abuja from Owerri, Imo state capital. Imo state has been in the news for civil unrest in many parts of the state. The state police command is yet to comment on this development. 

British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, marries fiancée Carrie Symonds in a secret wedding.

The couple, who have a child together,  said their wedding vows at Westminster Cathedral, London's main Roman Catholic Church.  The "small ceremony", attended by a small group of family and friends, took place on Saturday afternoon, May 29, a Downing Street spokesman said.  The spokesman added that the couple will celebrate again with family and friends next summer.  This is Boris Johnson's third marriage and Carrie's first. 

The Delta State Police Command says the five persons caught by vigilantes in Ughelli are not ritualists but destitute contrary to reports by some online news media.

Online reports had claimed that five suspected human parts dealers including four women were arrested by Otokutu Vigilantes Group under the Otokutu bridge in Ughelli South Local Government Area of the state on Thursday, May 27. The suspects were handed over to Otujeremi Police Station for further actions. Four killed as gunmen raze another police station in Imo

Less than 24 hours after gunmen razed down the Atta police station in Njaba local government area of Imo state, another police station in Izombe in Oguta local government area has been razed by some unknown gunmen.    A statement released by Bala Elakana, spokesperson of the state police command, says the gunmen burnt the police station at about 7pm on Saturday night, May 29. He added that four hoodlums were neutralized during the attack while others escaped with bullet wounds.    Bala added that the Commissioner of Police, Imo State, CP Abutu Yaro, commended the men for their abiding faith in defence of the public space and urged them to be resilient in this fight, until the enemies of the people are totally defeated. 

President buhari to visit Ghana over Mali crisis

President Buhari will on Sunday, May 30, depart Abuja for Accra, Ghana to attend an emergency Extraordinary Summit of ECOWAS, convened to discuss recent political crisis in Mali.   A statement released by Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, said the meeting is at the instance of the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS and President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo. ''Prior to the Extraordinary Summit, the President had met with the Special Envoy and ECOWAS mediator in Mali, former President Goodluck Jonathan, who briefed him on the latest developments in the country following his meeting with key political actors in the West African country. As the situation in Mali continues to evolve, Nigeria had condemned the May 24 military coup, the subsequent detention of the president and prime minister by soldiers, and called for the immediate and unconditional release of all civilian officials detained.''

14 abducted Greenfield students released

  14 students of Greenfield University in Kaduna State who were abducted from their hostels on April 20, have been released.    The students were released on Saturday afternoon, May 29, at a location along the Kaduna- Abuja highway.    Channels Television reported that Chairman of the Parents Forum, Markus Zarmai and few others were expected to receive the students at the drop-off location.   Though the government and police authorities are yet to confirm the development, parents of the abducted students said that they paid ransom, in addition to providing eight new motorcycles to the kidnappers before they agreed to release their children. 

Jewerly fortified by Diezani worth N14.4billion - EFCC boss, Abdulrasheed bawa reveals

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, today May 28, disclosed that the jewelry forfeited by the former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke is worth N14.4 billion.   Bawa made the disclosure when he appeared before the House of Representatives committee.   ''Jewelry forfeited from the former minister has been valued by relevant government agencies and the estimated value of the jewelry is 14.4 billion naira.”he said   Bawa noted that the estimated value of the houses seized and forfeited from Diezani is $80 million and that all the assets are in the custody of the commission and have not been sold.   The House of Reps committee is assessing the status of all recovered loot moveable and immovable assets from 2002-2020 by agencies of government.   Diezani was a serving Minister under the Goodluck Jonathan administration. 

Abia vigilante arrested in port Harcourt for allegedly killing US-based businessman

The Rivers State Police Command has paraded a member of Abia State vigilante group, Okorie Chukwuma, for allegedly killing his boss, Mr Eyinaya Ogbonna. Eyinaya Ogbonna, a businessman based in the United States of America, had returned to Nigeria to invest and was building a gas station. He then employed the suspect through the Abia State Vigilante Service to work for him and possibly safeguard the facility. However, the suspect, Okorie Chukwuma, was reluctant to submit to his boss' directives and developed animosity towards him. He allegedly conspired with his colleague, another member of the vigilante and shot him dead with a pump-action gun during his boss' visit to the facility. After killing Ogbonna, Chukwuma then stole his Toyota Venza car. He was arrested when he went to Port Harcourt to sell the car. The suspect confessed to the crime during an interview with journalists in Rivers State. 

Serial rapist sentenced to 1,088 years in prison

A Pretoria high court on Thursday May 27, sentenced a convicted serial rapist who raped and robbed 56 women across Pretoria suburbs for five years, to 1,088 years in prison.  33-year-old Sello Abram Mapunya was convicted on Wednesday May 26, for 41 rapes and 40 separate house breakings and house robberies, as well as assault with the intent to commit grievous bodily harm, robbery and theft. Mapunya who committed the crime while he lived with his girlfriend, eight-year-old son and four-year-old daughter in Pretoria, attacked women in Tshwane’s suburbs of Nellmapius, Mamelodi, Silverton, Olievenhoutbosch and Atteridgeville. His youngest victim was 14. She was attacked while walking home with a friend in Olievenhoutbosch. His eldest victim was 55. Mapunya who was initially charged with 101 different crimes began his crime spree in 2014 and it ended in March 2019 after he was arrested by detectives from the serial electronic crimes investigation unit.  Judge Papi Mosopa sentenc

Governor sanwo-olu says parents of children convicted of cultism will be punished

The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said the parents of children convicted of cultism will also be punished. He said this while addressing students on Thursday, May 27, during the Children’s Day celebration at the Police College, Ikeja. Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, said a new law had been signed to fight cultism and it includes punishment for parents of wards convicted of cultism. Speaking on behalf of the Lagos State Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, said: "The new law against cultism prescribes punitive measures for parents of young people convicted of cultism. Parents should be vigilant and monitor their children." He added: "We owe them a duty to ensure that their dreams and aspirations are realised through continuous training, guidance and mentoring." 

I never received N2bn from recovered loot- malami replies lawmakers

Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami has debunked claim of him or his office receiving N2bn from recovered loot. Malami was queried by the house of representatives ad hoc committee probing the status of recovered loot on Tuesday May 26. The lawmakers who asked the AGF how the N2 billion which was never approved as budgetary allocation was spent, cited a letter from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) directing the release of the funds following a request made for the money to be used to prosecute terror suspects. Reacting to this in a statement released by his media aide Umar Gwandu on Thursday May 27, Malami insisted that the request never came from his office. Man, 48, arrested for allegedly defiling his 3 underage daughters in Anambra

Woman fighting for her life after she was beaten, gang raped and left hanging naked from an electricity pole in India

The victim was left for dead after she was reportedly ambushed by a group of men as she went to an open toilet during a wedding celebration at her home. She was later found hanging from the pole in the village of Chakhabib Rudhiya in the northern state of Bihar on Tuesday, May 25. Villagers rushed her to hospital after she was discovered unconscious and in a critical state. It has been reported that the woman was targeted after she used an open toilet. Acccording to India Today, she was allegedly dragged away by the men who took her to a deserted area where she was raped and beaten. The men allegedly threatened to kill her if she resisted, and stole her jewellery, according to the report. After they thought the woman was dead, they hung her body from an electricity pole. She was taken to a hospital in the town of Dalsinghsarai, before being referred to another hospital for treatment. Alleged yahoo boy who tried to buy N44m range rover with bitcoin arrested by EFCC

A suspected internet frauster who allegedly tried to buy a Range Rover worth N44million with Bitcoin, has been arrested by the EFCC.  The suspect identified as Tobiloba Aramide Ogundiyan is accused by the EFCC’s Advance Fee Fraud Section of committing online fraud and converting his loot into cryptocurrency. A statement released by the agency read;  Ogundiyan acquired his ill-gotten wealth from internet fraud, layered it into a Bitcoin account and finally integrated it by approaching a car shop owner in Lekki to purchase a Range Rover Vela P380 2018 model worth N44,000,000 ($97,626 USD in Bitcoin) sometime in March 2021.  The anti-graft agency said the suspect and seven others were arrested by the commission’s Lagos operatives on May 18, 2021 at River View Estate, Lekki, Lagos for alleged computer-related fraud. World bank approves$700m loan for water, sanitation and hygiene services in Nigeria

The World Bank has approved a $700 million loan for the Nigeria Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene Programme (SURWASH).   In a statement released Thursday, May 27, the World Bank said the loan will provide six million people with basic drinking water services and 1.4 million people access to improved sanitation services.   According to the release, the approval was granted on May 25, and the credit facility will also help deliver improved Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services to 2,000 schools and health care facilities, and assist 500 communities to achieve open defecation-free status.   The projects are part of the Federal Government’s National Action Plan (NAP) for the revitalisation of Nigeria’s water supply, sanitation, and hygiene sector.   The statement reads: "In 2019, approximately 60 million Nigerians were living without access to basic drinking water services, 80 million without access to improved sanitation facilities an

He takes over from Lt General Ibrahim Attahiru, who died in an air crash in Kaduna last Friday. Prior to his appointment Major General Yahaya was the General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army and the incumbent Theatre Commander of the Counter terrorism Counter Insurgency military outfit in the North East code named  Operation HADIN KAI. 

President Buhari offers condolence as over 156 people are feared dead after a boat capsized due to overloading in Kebbi state

  The incident took place early Wednesday, May 26, when the boat carrying about 180 passengers left Loko Mina in Niger State at about 7.30 am and was heading to a market in Kebbi State?, according to Mary Noel-Berje, a spokeswoman for the Niger State government.   The wooden boat capsized near Wara, a town on the shores of Kainji Lake, part of the Niger River, said Yahaya Sarki, a spokesman for the governor of Kebbi.   Around 20 people have been rescued and four bodies recovered so far, Mary Noel-Berje said, adding that the search and rescue operations are ongoing while survivors were taken to the hospital for treatment.   Most of the passengers are from Kebbi State and are believed to be traders.   Authorities are citing overloading as the cause of the accident as the boat was meant to ferry not more than 80 passengers but instead had up to 180 passengers on it.   President Muhammadu Buhari described the reported capsizing of a boat in Ngaski Local Government Area of Kebbi

The partial closure of Eko Bridge for emergency repairs, will start from June 4 to August 13.   The state Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Frederic Oladeinde, said in a statement that the repair of the Eko Bridge, from Costain to Alaka in-bound National Stadium, was necessary to complete the rehabilitation works at the opposite side of the bridge earlier embarked upon by the Federal Government.   Motorists are to take alternative routes during the period of repairs.   Oladeinde asked motorists to take note of the diversion routes and comply with directives from the State’s Traffic Management Personnel.   The commissioner urged motorists to bear the inconveniences, as the project was aimed at achieving a "seamless, safe and efficient transport system that would meet the transportation needs of a larger population." 

Two kidnapped from their houses in Abuja

Two men identified as Mr Ayodele Somorin and Mr Oladimeji Josiah have reportedly been abducted by gunmen from their houses in hilly area close to the Lottery Quarters and few metres away from Living Faith Church at Byazhin in Kubwa.   Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred around 11:45pm on Friday May 21. It was learnt that the gunmen broke into the first house and took away Somorin, and then went to the second house where they shot sporadically before kidnapping Mr Josiah. They are now reportedly demanding for N10 million ransom each to free the two neighbors.    The police reportedly visited the scene after the incident was reported at Byazhin Police Station the next day, Saturday, May 22.    Spokesperson of FCT Police Command, Mariam Yusuf confirmed the incident and also said the police has launched an operation to rescue the victims. 

Four teenagers arrested for allegedly stealing goats in Kano

The four suspects were arrested in Sani Mainagge quarters area of the state.   Spokesperson of the command, DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, May 25, said the teenage suspects specialise in livestock theft.    "On the 08/05/2021at about 1600hrs, information was received from a good Samaritan that, some young men were seen in a Tricycle with some goats suspected to be stolen. Evicted student dies of hunger and fatigue

A South African student identified as Yonwabo Manyanya has reportedly died from hunger and fatigue after being evicted from her accommodation because she could no longer pay rent owed.   Sunday Times reported that her family got to know about her death through Facebook, as her pictures were being shared by her friends on social media who expressed their condolences.   26-year-old Yonwabo Manyanya who was studying towards a diploma in electrical and infrastructure construction at eThekwini TVET College, is alleged to have died of hunger and fatigue after spending three days sleeping outside the campus.    Her brother, Mlungisi Manyanya who could not reach her after calling for six consecutive days, never knew that her lifeless body had been discovered four days prior to that.   He said;    “We only got to know through Facebook that she had been found dead. The Senegalese-American singer's car was stolen from a gas station on Monday night, May 24 in the Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta.    The car was reportedly stolen as the singer was pumping gas into his car.   According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Akon stopped at a Quiktrip gas station to fill his white Range Rover up with gas. An unknown thief has stolen a carton of fish belonging to a petty trader in Gboko local government Area of Benue state.    According to Smith Akom Takema, an aide to the Benue State Governor, the widowed trader bought a carton of iced fish on Tuesday, May 25, dropped it at the usual spot where she normally does her business and went to buy firewood.   She was devasted and inconsolable when she returned and found the carton of fish missing. CBN confirms N410.25/$ as new official exchange rate

CBN has disclosed that NAFEX Investor & Exporter forex window rate is now Nigeria's official benchmark exchange rate.   The Central Bank of Nigeria reported an official exchange rate of N410.25/$1and referenced it as "NAFEX Exch, Rate (USD) as at Monday, May 24, 2021" on its website.   Earlier in May, the CBN removed the exchange rate of N379/$1 from its website, conforming with the bank’s policy that the NAFEX (Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Rate Fixing) rate is now the default reference exchange rate for official and legitimate transactions.   Also, the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) monetary policy committee has voted to keep the monetary policy rate at 11.5 percent.   The CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, declared the committee’s decision at the end of a two-day meeting at the CBN headquarters on Tuesday, May 25.   The liquidity ratio was also held at 30% and the cash reserve ratio (CRR) was kept at 27.5 percent by the committee. 

Policeman not suicide bomber died in Ebonyi after grenade on his waist mistakenly exploded - Police

The Ebonyi state police command has said that the man killed in an explosion on Tuesday May 25 in Afikpo, Ebonyi State is a policeman and not a suicide bomber as claimed by many.    Recall that an explosion which occurred opposite Amizi Amangbala Primary School in Afikpo North threw the area into panic as passersby scampered for safety.   Spokesperson of the Police in Ebonyi state, Loveth Odah said the victim of the blast is a Mobile Police Officer on special deployment to Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.   The police Inspector identified as Mr Idi Aminu, reportedly died as a result of an accidental hand grenade explosion.   Odah who said the police officer was an operative of MOPOL 32 and not a suicide bomber as claimed by many, mistakenly hit the lead of his grenade which was hanging on his waist.    She said;    “He mistakenly hit the lead of his grenade which was hanging on his waist with his elbow resulting in the deadly explosion."   His remain

  Shakespeare's name and face were shared across the globe on December 8 2020 after receiving his vaccine at the University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire. 18-year-old lady set to wed this weekend in Kaduna declared missing

Nafisa Yusuf Laila has been declared missing.
