FG reaches out to UK Government over threat to impose sanctions on Nigeria

The Federal Government said it has reached out to the British Government over the threat by the British Parliament to impose sanctions on Nigeria’s officials for their roles in the End SARS protests.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, disclosed this yesterday, November 24, while fielding questions from State House correspondents at the end of the weekly virtual Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Onyeama said the Nigerian government reached to present its own side of the story.

He said the lawmakers are not responsible for imposing sanctions but added that it is necessary to give to the U.K. government Nigeria’s own position to enable them to have a balanced perspective.

He said: "Yes, we have reached out to the U.K government. The meeting that took place were Parliamentarians and they don’t speak for the U.K. government which acts for the United Kingdom and has also heard the side of the (Nigerian) government regarding everything that has happened.

"So, we have been in touch with them and engaging with them. And of course, as in any democracy, the members of parliament are able to also air their view.

"But what is important is that a balanced picture is made available to them before they take any decision.

"The U.K. government has been briefed. There was a U.K. Parliamentarians meeting and the U.K. government, which acts for the United Kingdom has also heard the side of the (Nigerian) government regarding everything that has happened."

Boko Haram throws Maiduguri into darkness again, blows up power tower.

Barely 72 hours after electric power was restored in Maiduguri, Borno State, Boko Haram insurgents on Saturday, March 27, blew up another transmission tower in the city. Premium Times reports that the insurgents planted explosives on each leg of the tower, which they detonated at about 6 a.m. In January, the terrorists struck power installations thrice at a location about 50km from Maiduguri to keep the city in the dark. The power, was however, restored on Wednesday, March 24, after nearly two months of blackout. While reconnecting the installation, three TCN officials were severely injured by a landmine planted by the insurgents. Another official was said to have lost his life after falling off a tower. The city has now been thrown into another darkness following the Saturday morning attack.

Nigerian footballer, Kelvin Odenigbo, drowns in Belarus lake

A Nigerian footballer, Kelvin Odenigbo, playing for FC Vitebsk in Belarus, has been found dead after drowning in a lake.
