Nigerian selected for UN Woman Police Officer of the Year Award

A Chief Superintendent of the Nigeria Police Force, Catherine Ugorji has been selected as one of the two runners-up for the prestigious United Nations Woman Police Officer of the Year award for 2020.

Ugorji joined the Nigeria Police Force in 2003 and served as a criminal investigator from the local to regional level, Child Protection Officer, Divisional Crime Officer up to Acting Deputy Commander of the Ogudu Police Division in Lagos.

The Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix in a press statement released by the National Information Officer of the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Nigeria Oluseyi Soremekun, averred that she exemplifies the best of UN policing.

Of the 1,300 UN policewomen deployed in UN peacekeeping operations, the Nigerian police officer who is currently serving with the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) made the 21-women list for the award.

The award would be presented during a virtual ceremony presided over by Mr Lacroix on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Luis Carrilho, UN Police Advisor who congratulated Ugorji for being chosen as a runner-up, described her leadership of “three Formed Police Units(FPU) in Gao” as remarkable.

Carrilho said;

“Catherine has introduced tactical operations that have been instrumental in reducing crime in the area, in support of the Malian security forces and the host population.
“In addition to this very demanding role, Chief Superintendent Ugorji has worked diligently to improve living conditions for women police officers so they can serve safely and with dignity."

NAPTIP arrests Islamic teacher for sexually exploiting 16 year old student in Maiduguri

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) Maiduguri Zonal Command, has arrested a 28-year-old Islamic teacher over alleged sexual exploitation of a 16-year-old student. A statement issued by the agency on Thursday, August 5, said the suspect, Yanga Abdullahi of Maura ward, is a teacher at Darul-Arqam Islamiyya school, Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. "The suspect sexually exploited a 16-year-old girl of Mairi Kuwait area, Maiduguri, Borno State. She is a student of the suspect at Darul-Arqam Islamiyya school Maiduguri." the statement read.

Tension in Enugu as policeman shoots 27-yr-old Law student to death

There is tension in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State over the death of a 27-yr-old 500 level Law student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Augustine Ugwu, who was allegedly murdered by an officer of Nigeria Police Force at Nsukka. The deceased was said to have gone to a beer parlour at Odobido in Nsukka council area with his friend (name withheld) where he was trailed by a local security outfit constituted by the chairman of the local government area, Patrick Omeje. It was gathered that the deceased had just arrived the beer parlour and ordered for a drink when members of the local security outfit (Civilian Anti-cult) arrested him and after beating him, handed him overs to the officer in charge of Anti-cult in Nsukka, Ferdinand Ochi, who allegedly murdered him over a yet-to-be-identified issue.
