US coronavirus death toll exceeds china's

The Coronavirus death toll in the US has officially exceeded that of China as confirmed by figures released on Tuesday by Johns Hopkins University. The Baltimore-based university said there have been 3,415 deaths in the US from the virus, more than the 3,309 reported officially in China. . . The country with most fatalities is Italy as 12,428 people have died, since the virus was confirmed in the country. They are closely followed by Spain which has recorded 8,269 deaths, and then the United States. The US also has a total of 175,067 confirmed cases of Coronavirus, making it the country with the most confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the world. Italy is next with 105,792 cases, followed by Spain with 94,417 and China with an official tally of 82,278.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has warned Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), involved in the management of Coronavirus disease, not to see it as an opportunity to loot public funds The antigraft agency gave the warning in a statement released today March 31st. It cautioned the public officers against inflation and padding of cost of items being procured under emergencies. House of representatives members donate March, April salaries for the fight against coronavirus

The 360 members of the House of Representatives have resolved to donate their two months salary to the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria, the Speaker, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila has announced. The two-month salary donation, the Speaker said, will be independent of the contributions by individual lawmakers to alleviate the hardship that their constituents face at this time of national emergency. He said that starting from March salary, the lawmakers' donation will be transferred directly to the National Relief Fund account for the fight against COVID-19, the Speaker also said. NERC reserve plan to increase electricity tariff

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has reversed plans to effect the transition to a cost-reflective tariff on April 1. Recall that in its December 2019 Minor Review of Multi-Year Tariff Order 2015 and Minimum Remittance Order for the Year 2020, the NERC disclosed its plan of effecting a switch to cost-reflective tariff. The move was expected to lead to an increase in electricity tariff. . World Health Organization (WHO) has warned the general populace to avoid wearing face masks during the Coronavirus pandemic unless they are sick with the virus or they are health workers in daily contact with sick people. ... According to the WHO, unnecessary or bad usage of masks can even help in spreading the virus, rather than contain it. . "There is no specific evidence to suggest that the wearing of masks by the mass population has any potential benefit. In fact, there's some evidence to suggest the opposite in the misuse of wearing a mask properly or fitting it properly," Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO health emergencies program, said at a media briefing in Geneva, Switzerland, on Monday.  There also is the issue that we have a massive global shortage," Ryan said about masks and other medical supplies.  Right now the people most at risk from this virus are frontline health workers who are exposed to the virus every second of every day.

BREAKING: Bauchi records third case of coronavirus

The Bauchi State Government has confirmed a third case of COVID-19 in the state. The victim is a 55 years old man who tested positive for the virus. Addressing journalists at one of the isolation centres in Bauchi, the deputy governor of the state, Bala Tela, said a third case was confirmed when the disease control centre, NCDC, returned the result of the 21 suspected blood samples taken for testing. The deputy governor, who is the chairman of the state task force on COVID-19, said the third case was part of the 70 blood samples tested in the state so far. He said all the three cases including the state governor, Bala Mohammed, are currently being managed at the isolation centre at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching hospital. The deputy governor lamented that the state has done some contact tracing of the first and second index cases but they are yet to get their blood samples taken. A Nigerian medical doctor, Alfa Sa’adu, has died in the United Kingdom after being infected with Coronavirus. The 68-year-old man, who is a native of Kwara State, died on Tuesday, March 31, 2020. Until his demise, Sa’adu worked at Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust and was a former Medical Director of London Hospital. COVID-19: Not all hand sanitizers can kill virus -pharmacist

A pharmacist, Mr Ayobambo Fajuyitan, on Tuesday, cautioned Nigerians against using hand sanitisers with low alcohol content in preventing COVID-19. “Not all hand sanitisers in the market are capable of killing the COVID-19 virus because the alcohol contents are low,’’ the pharmacist told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the telephone in Ibadan on Tuesday. According to him, hand sanitiser capable of killing the virus must have 40 per cent alcohol content. “When at home, it’s preferred you use hand washing method: It’s better to use the hand wash in a running tap for 20 seconds when at home,’’ he said. Former Republic of Congo president, Jacques Joaquim Yhombi Opango has passed away after contracting coronavirus (COVID-19). He was 81 Yhombi-Opango died in a Paris hospital on Monday, his family confirmed to AFP. His son told the news agency that Yhombi-Opango was ill before he contracted the virus. Yhombi-Opango, who was an army officer who rose to power after the assassination of President Marien Ngouabi, led Congo-Brazzaville from 1977 until he was removed from power in 1979, with the country's current leader, Denis Sassou Nguesso taking over. In 1987, he was jailed for three years after he was accused of participating in a plot to overthrow Sassou Nguesso. After his release from prison, he founded the Rally for Democracy and Development (RDD) party but lost in a 1992 presidential election. In 1994, Yhombi-Opango became the prime minister but fled into exile in France when the civil war broke out in Congo in 1997.

RCCG donates COVID-19 relief materials to Lagos

Lockdown: Electricity bills across Nigeria will increase from Wednesday

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission had made the disclosure in its December 2019 Minor Review of Multi-Year Tariff Order 2015 and Minimum Remittance Order for the Year 2020. The decision to implement the increment has however not been suspended by the NERC despite the lockdown caused by the  coronavirus pandemic . A top source at Ikeja Electric revealed that the firm had not received any directive from NERC as regards reversal of the plan,  The Punch  reports. He said, “According to the tariff order for the year, we are supposed to increase on April 1, 2020. Only surviving member of E-money's gang arrested by SARS operatives

34-year-old Ifeanyi Asiatugbulam, said to be the only surviving member of late millionaire kidnapper and former police officer Corporal Collins Ezenwa aka E-money's gang, has been arrested by operatives of the Imo State Special Armed Robbery Squad (SARS) alongside one other suspect. . The suspect was arrested alongside 20-year-old Kingsley Udo Johnson at Ikot Akwa in Nsit Atai Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State in an operation coordinated by the SARS commander in the state, CSP Victor Godfrey. Asiatugbulam escaped during a gun duel in which E-money and two other gang members were killed on January 27, 2018 at Atta community of Ikeduru, Imo state. Though he was arrested in another case in which one Onyia Destiny Chinyere was kidnapped and driven to their den at Oru East of Imo State, he mysteriously escaped from police custody. One AK47 rifle and 54 live 7.6mm ammunition was recovered from him at that time.

Botswana records first 3 cases of coronavirus

  Botswana is the latest African country to confirm cases of the deadly coronavirus. . On Monday night, health minister Lemogang Kwape announced the country's first three cases of coronavirus on state television. Kwape said the three people who had tested positive for the virus are two males and a female, who had travelled from Thailand and the United Kingdom respectively. The health minister further stated the COVID 19 patients are already in isolation undergoing treatment.

  British Airways has grounded all flights to and from Gatwick Airport due to coronavirus but still operate from London Heathrow at a severely reduced schedule. This is due to the ‘considerable restrictions and challenging market environment’ amid the coronavirus pandemic, a spokesperson said. . They continued: ‘Like many other airlines, we will temporarily suspend our flying schedule at Gatwick. We are contacting affected customers to discuss their options.’ The decision by BA to shut its Gatwick operation came hours after easyJet grounded its entire fleet of 330 aircraft. As the nation continues to battle the Coronavirus scourge, Nigeria's Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, has said that no country in the world can boast of having enough ventilators within their healthcare system. A ventilator is a machine designed to provide mechanical ventilation by moving breathable air in and out of the lungs, to deliver breaths to a patient who is physically unable to breathe, or breathing insufficiently. The machine is attached to a tube inserted in the patient’s airway so it can deliver air into the lungs. Nigeria has less than 500 ventilators in the whole Federation, a matter that is of great concern to many Nigerians.

Minister of humanitarian affairs, disaster management and social development, Sadiya Farouq, says the Federal government has begun cash transfer to the poorest households in the country to cushion the economic impact of the Coronavirus pandemic. Farouq announced this at a press conference in Abuja. She said her ministry has commenced advance payment of conditional cash transfer to the poorest households in the country. Four killed during cultists, hoodlums clashes in lagos

No fewer than four persons have allegedly been killed in the ongoing supremacy battle between hoodlums from the Akosile area and the Network Base in Gasikiya, Amusun area of the Apapa-Iganmu Local Council Development Area of Lagos State. Some of the residents, who spoke with  PUNCH Metro  on Monday, identified the deceased simply as Mai-Rago, Agbo, Tuwo and Akeem, aka Sample, adding that the clashes had extended to the Gangari, Adeyemi, Oju Ina, Arewa and Amusun, among other areas in Apapa Iganmu. During the clashes, scores of residents and business owners are usually thrown into panic and run helter-skelter for safety. The Imo state police command have arrested a housewife, Ada Amuzie, for killing a commercial sex worker, identified simply as Happiness who she accused of dating her husband, Ejike Lambert Amuzie. Sadiya Farouk, minister of humanitarian affairs, disaster management and social development, says the ministry has commenced cash transfer to poorest households in the country to cushion effect of the coronavirus pandemic. The minister said this during a press briefing by the presidential task force on the disease in Abuja, on Monday. 37 suspected coronavirus patients arrested, quarantined in ebonyi isolation centre
